Crime outside New York City is continuing its downward trend, with crime down 8 percent from January through May compared to the same period in 2010. Crime statewide has dropped steadily over the past 10 years.
The database below shows the number of crimes reported by each agency for the five-month periods of January to May in 2010 and in 2011.
Some police agencies have been excluded due to delinquent reporting of 2011 data.
The data comes from the FBI's National Incident-Based Reporting System and staff research. Each reported incident is classified as either a violent crime (murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault) or a property crime (burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft).
